The Room (single)

by Brian Campbell

/

about

A bossa-nova-ish song about an intimate afternoon, with touches of the East - Persia, India. Kenneth Patchen wrote a brief love poem called 23rd Street Runs Into Heaven that serves as a kind of lyrical template here - not that there are any lines or phrases from that poem in this song. But it's a fine poem with a similar mood and setting, well worth reading in any case (it's easily accessible online.) A certain friend has a lamp stand with a sculpted whirling dervish holding up the shade: that personal reference also somehow got, however vaguely, into this song. Enjoy!

lyrics

THE ROOM

It's so cool
Bein' here with you
On this hazy, lazy, sun-filled afternoon
'Mid the hanging plants and incense
That dervish in your room
Drinking tea, weaving tapestries
On conversation's loom
Outside are worlds of sorrow and strife
Of loneliness and harm
You can hear it in the beggar's cry
And in the traffic's storm
But we can forget it all for now in this sanctum of your life
This sanctum of your room

So we blend and bend together
To the gazales of Akbar Khan
Touch the moon with our fingers
Reshape the master plan
Here are mountains and valleys
That we must traverse
May today be a valley day
In the river of our birth

But something tells me we'll not be
Together very long
That misery will have its way
Like the ending of this song --
But we can forget it all for now in the sanctum of your room . . .
The sanctum that is you . . .

[Instrumental]

It's so cool
Bein' here with you
On this hazy, lazy, hash-filled afternoon
Mid the hanging plants and incense
That dervish in your room
Drinking tea, weaving tapestries
On conversation's loom
In this sanctum I'm so glad to’ve shared with you
This sanctum of your room.

LISTENER COMMENTS:

I find this song very soothing. Thank you for this gift.
-Sue D., Vancouver, B.C.

Some of the lyrics in The Room are stunning, such as "weaving tapestries on conversation's loom." The arrangements are very interesting, giving the music a sweet melancholy feeling, the exotic sound supporting the erotic message. One thing in particular is that the form reflects the content, the downbeats pulling the listener down toward the steaminess. . . - Elaine K., Victoria B.C.

"The Room" is definitely enhanced by the eastern overtones and makes an interesting contrast for your voice...Thanks so much! - Davetta F., Montreal

The arrangement of 'The Room" captures well the gentle intoxication in this "hash filled" afternoon, and the slow rhythm allows me to settle into the lyrics and the feeling of this very temporal sanctuary that, for a few moments, feels eternal. -Michael C., Toronto

I enjoyed this much..... there is a george harrison-esque touch to it. I never got into sitar as much as my fellow compatriots from the subcontinent....but these transitions are very smooth. Yes.... it is inner sanctumish...!!
