MY PURRFECT LOVER music & lyrics by Brian Campbell ©2020 (SOCAN)

She snuggles up beside me
Whis-purs sweet nothings in my ear
She'll even lick me and tickle me
And fill with joy my years
She's my constant lover and companion
And she's really where it's at
And that's because —

She's my cat
She's my cat
Meaw meauw meaw meaw MEAW,
meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw,
She’s my cat,
Meaw meauw meaw meaw MEAW,
meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw,
She’s my cat
She’s my cat

She’s so gentle of touch
So discrete of step
She'll tiptoe over my crowded bookcase
And not upset a single cassette (or CD, or DVD, or iPod, or iPhone charger, or glass turtle, or portrait of my grandmother, or whatever)
She descends from a sacred royalty
And with buddha's serenity of mind
She'll listen to my every confidence
And I'm sure she understands (somewhere, in that pistachio-sized brain of hers, on some level, probably subliminal, like the icecubes in your magazine pictures, sort of like that)

With grace in every movement
She's really where it's at
And I love her, because —

She's my cat
She's my cat
Meaw meauw meaw meaw MEAW,
meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw,
She’s my cat,
Meaw meauw meaw meaw MEAW,
meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw,
She’s my cat
She’s my cat

When she's sick and dying
I'll take her to the SPCA
Then go to any pet shop
And replace her right away
Of course the next one will be different
(another sort of magnificat)
but I'll always miss her, because —

She's my one special cat
She's my cat
Meaw meauw meaw meaw MEAW,
meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw,
She’s my cat,
Meaw meauw meaw meaw MEAW,
meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw meaw,
She’s my cat
She’s my cat
Ooooooow (like dog)
hiss (like cat)

meaw

Listener comments (I really couldn't make these up!)

This was the purrrrrrrfect thing for me to listen to this morning Brian, thank you SO much! I am forwarding your website to a bunch of people, particularly the cat ones. I love your style, and admire your strength. Keep it up, dear you.
- Annie S., Montreal

This is really funny and interesting Brian. It started out sounding like Yankee Lady by Jesse Winchester, and I was thinking..."Brian is getting derivative" and then it got "special". Grinning from ear to ear here.
- Ian H, Pierrefonds, Quebec

This is ‘ purr' fun! You may well make a cat lover out of me!!! I love the playfulness and the musical variation throughout the song. Love the ending, too! - Eva A., Montreal

Shades of Dave Van Ronk I thought... how you use your voice - alternating between a softer, smoother singing voice and a rougher, gruffer talking voice. And a very expressive guitar. I'm not a cat person, they seem so aloof and unexpressive, but you seem to capture something about relating to cats, more about admiring them than actually interacting. Anyway, nice work!
-Zav L., Montreal

That song really picks you up. I do think of that lovely, enigmatic cat which you must dearly miss, especially now. You have a very professional studio working with you. It's hard to believe the quality of work that can be done without a record label behind it. Some progress has been great and it's democratic. Your guitar playing has also reached a high level. It's a great achievement and performance outlet.
- Ross M., Toronto

Thanks for sending me this song. It's enchantingly fun! A touch of Lenard Cohen and a lot of Sesame Street. I particularly like the talking bits, which reveal a humour that is quirky, erudite and only happens at 3 o'clock in the morning. -Michael C., Toronto

Hahaha oh Brian! Your song made me laugh. It was the highlight of the day! Thank you!! So I listened to it with one of my cats (Scruffy), and he was DEFINITELY listening, looking around with his ear up at every chorus.
And at the end where you ooofed and hissed he got up and came to my computer. Apparently, this song is super exciting for our feline friends.
Was that meow at the end Misha's? ...Such a lovely cover picture for the song. I'll try to see if our other cat wants to listen to it as well. :)
P.S, A week later: My Purrfect Lover chorus is too catchy to ignore - I sing it sometimes when cooking. It's in our subliminal minds now!
- Kaoru M., Montreal

This is wonderful. What a beautiful homage to your darling girl. And somehow I was laughing my head off and crying at the same time. Your voice is wonderful too....I love it. Thank you so much.
- Davetta F., Montreal

This is great, fun, sad, uplifting. . . thanks for the chance to listen.
- Elaine K., Montreal

Totally enjoyed this. Wickedly hilarious.. Tomorrow, as the sun rises, I will copy this note to others and place a subscription myself. Thank you Brian... tambourine man...
