Written some time ago when my own life felt like a shipwreck, this song has gained a weird resonance during this pandemic. As my friend Sharon C. put it below, it's about resilience. Let's have fun, and celebrate being here!
It’s been such a long long time
How do you do?
It’s really quite amazing
that we’ve managed to pull our way thru
How you could even get here
without a brick falling on your head
It may be our greatest accomplishment
that we’re not already dead
So what are we gonna do right now
Let’s just celebrate being here! Whoooo-
My house it’s a shipwreck
My bank account it’s sunk too
I ain’t got nothing but this busted heart
To give to you you you you you you you
My hopes right down to their underwear
Are really quite threadbare rare rare rare
Even the cost of this little song
Is getting far too dear dear dear dear
So what are we gonna do right now
Let’s just celebrate being here! Whoooo-
It’s really quite amazing that we can still reach up to the sky
It’s really quite amazing that we can still wonder why
That our metaphysical psychological
Hasn’t gone all confoundmixtupable
And our existential tragicomical
Hasn’t gone all supercombustible
So what are we gonna do right now
Let’s just celebrate being here! Whoooo-
Solo
It’s been such a long long time
How do you do? (do do do do)
It’s really quite amazing
that we’ve managed to pull our way thru thru thru thru thru
That we could even get here
without a bomb falling on our heads
It may be our greatest accomplishment
that we’re not already dead dead dead dead dead
So what are we gonna do right now
Let’s just celebrate being here! Whooooo
What are we gonna do right now
Let’s just celebrate being here! Whooooo

Celebrate being here! Whooooo
Celebrate being here!

too. Yes, let's just celebrate being here! - Teresa O., Montreal
Thank you for sending out this song. It’s a lot of fun. I sang along with some harmonies at the end. I laughed out loud at the part that mentioned "a brick falling on your head”! Yeah that’s about right. Haha. Made me smile. I don’t want to say that you sound like a clown but….your voice sounds quite humorous here... Has a lot of character. Haha. In a good way… it’s all good. In other words, well done! - Cathy W., Montreal
Very cheerful lyrics and happy music, thanks Brian. - Guy H., Montreal
This is a rather pleasant, warm and lovely song, sung by our friend Brian Campbell, poet, musician and balladeer. Try it out....but buy a copy if you can and gift it as well! - Rana B., Montreal
Very good tune Brian, I like the lyrics and melody very much. Certainly a good note to end this year on. Nice production, I can even live with the artificial horns which usually make me want to slug someone.
-John Jordan, singer/songwriter/saxophonist with the Montreal band Me Mom and Morgantaler + the ska collective Osmosis.
-Lol. Thanks for the lovely feedback, John. Yeah, I imagined I'd be hiring Ellwood again, but Martin succeeded in making those usually horrific horns liveable by doubling them with a Steinway piano line. Those horns almost become a reverb of the piano (except for the final note when the horn comes into its own)! A good strategy if you can use it. It also kind of suits the farcical nature of the song, besides saving time and $$. Of course I don't imagine you'll ever use that strategy, since you can always "blow your own horn"📣🎷🎷🎤! - BC
